Nitros generate just enough to hold off Rockies

The Kimberley Dynamiters had just enough offensive finish to finish off the Columbia Valley Rockies last night.
Mason Spear scored twice and added an assist to lead the Nitros to a 4-2 victory at the Civic Centre.
Kimberley (14-11-1-3) was six seconds away from entering the second intermission with a 4-0 lead when Columbia Valley’s Stephen Hynes scored to spook the home side.
“We had a lot of chances early and halfway through the game, and then we kind of got a little frustrated that we couldn’t score goals and they chipped in a couple,” said head coach Kevin MacKay. “We were squeezing the stick a little too much.”
Kory Movold took a pass at the far post and roofed it two minutes into the third period to halve Kimberley’s lead, but that was as close as Columbia Valley (4-27-0-1) got.
“We get into bad habits when we play this team, and they take us off our game,” said MacKay. “When we chip pucks and are getting the puck in deep, we have success. (Last night) we were trying to pack the puck in and it kind of bit us in the backside.”
MacKay said he’s seen loads of improvement from the Rockies since the beginning of the season.
“They’ve worked hard from Day 1,” he said. “They slowed it down a little bit, and it was kind of a long, slow game for the most part. We didn’t get our legs going or some flow going... You’ve got to give them credit: they took that away from us.”
The Dynamiters have won all three meetings between the clubs this year, but always having to fend off late Rockies’ rallies.
“Even thought they’re a little behind in the standings, they’re always a hard team to play against — especially on a night like this,” said Spear. “Sometimes they’ll take you by surprise.”
Spear — who got the second and winning markers — actually doubled his season total for goals.
“I had a couple of chances to get the third one, but squeezed it a little too tight I guess. Maybe next time,” he shrugged.
Thierry Martine opened scoring while Spear’s linemate Matt Foster jammed in Kimberley’s fourth goal.
Foster also had an assist, while Brennan Romanovitch got a pair of helpers to lead Kimberley to its fourth-straight victory.
“Since Romo got here, we’ve kind of been working hard, chipping in with secondary scoring so it’s alright helping the team win, getting on a good run,” said Spear.
Tory Caldwell made 28 saves for Kimberley, while Jeff Magee stopped 34 shots for the visitors.
Kimberley called up Austin Richter from the Cranbrook AA midget Ice, and he impressed. In fact, the only clue that he was new to the gig was the cage mask he was required to wear.
“He played a role for us, got some energy, he was physical. He skates well and he’s a big kid, so we were impressed with his first game,” said MacKay. “He got a breakaway in probably his third shift in junior hockey.”
He slotted in on an energy line alongside Brett Luker and Chad Filatoff.

Cost is $35 and includes transportation to and from Fernie, plus your ticket to the game. The Bus will leave the Civic Centre at 5:00 p.m., Wal Mart Cranbrook at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, December 28th and return right after the game. Tickets must be purchased in advance.
