Luck will side with the Kimberley Dynamiters instead of Fernie one of these days. Saturday just wasn't one of them.

That evening, the Ghostriders rode a late fortuitous bounce to a 5-4 home victory.

Kimberley head coach Kevin MacKay noted talk of deserving a better fate has dominated postmortems against Fernie of late.

"We're disappointed obviously. We're about five minutes away from going to overtime, but we've got to learn to fight through that," he said.

"I think each game we're getting stronger and competing a little bit more. They're a pretty good hockey team, three lines deep offensively and they put some pressure on us. We kept chipping away.

"I think our mind frame is pretty good. I think everyone knows that we're just that one step away at this stage. If we can make that step hopefully Friday night, that last game against Fernie this year, that would be a big boost for us."

Next Friday will mark the seventh meeting between the Eddie Mountain Division foes this season, and fourth in a row.

Kimberley will be looking for its first win in the series, having taken just a point so far.

The Nitros had golden chance to get two on Saturday, despite the loss of captain Corey Allen who was tossed for a hit from behind during the game's first shift.

Logan Gutfriend (PP) and Matt Foster gave Kimberley a 2-0 lead by 8:21. Mike Wiest replied during a Fernie man advantage a few minutes later, but Brennan Foreman struck on a power play early in the second to restore the Dynamiters' two-goal cushion.

"We had a 3-1 lead there, things were going pretty good our way, got into a couple of penalties in the middle frame and took our momentum away. We were back on our heels," said MacKay.

Tim Crawley and James Werner tied the game going into the third, where Michael Anderson put Fernie ahead. Foster scored again to tie the game before bad luck struck for the Nitros at 14:52.

"They were putting pressure on us, and the puck just slid across the crease and went off our defenceman and into the net. It was kind of a bad break, but those things happen," said MacKay.

Kimberley's Michael Smith was named second star after turning aside 39 Fernie salvos.

"He made some huge saves for us, but for the most part we kept them to the outside," said MacKay. "It's a small barn, so there's lots of shots all of the time. Territorially, I think they were in our zone more than we were in theirs, but up until the third period we really kept them outside... Defensively we played a decent game — we've just got to follow that through for the whole 60 minutes."

Foster had four points Saturday; he has been in on each of the Nitros' seven goals in three games since returning from a trip home to Ontario over Christmas.

"Sometimes that's all you need, is that mental break to get recharged. He came back and he's been very strong for us, with a lot of goals in the last three games," said MacKay.

"For the most part, we go every day except Sundays, and I think guys just need to be refreshed."

MacKay noted that not all players have returned from the break with a similar bounce.

"I think that's our biggest factor: in the first game back, you've got 10-12 guys going really hard and the other guys trailing behind. The next game it's a different group, and then (Saturday) night, it's a different group again. When we play a team like Fernie that's that deep, we've got to have every single person doing his job, and doing it quite well."
