On the road again

Nitros Hit The Road for Two

The Kimberley Dynamiters hit the road again this weekend for two games against Eddie Mountain Division rivals. On Friday night the Nitros play the Fernie Ghostriders for the fourth time in two weeks, the third straight time in Fernie. The Bavarian City Bunch have yet to defeat the Ghostriders this season, but have been close every game including carrying a lead late into the third period last Saturday night.

On Saturday the Dynamiters head west to face the Creston Valley Thunder Cats. The Thunder Cats have a record of 19 - 13 - 0 - 3 and sit in third place in the tough Eddie Mountain Division.

Game time both nights is 7:30 PM.

Nitros Captain Corey Allen

The Dynamiters received some great news this past week. Captain Corey Allen has been selected to represent the club at the KIJHL All Star game next Tuesday (Jan 12th) in Beaver Valley. Allen has 16 goals and 24 assists in 34 games played for the Nitros. As well as 131 minutes in penalties.

We wish Corey all the very best in the All Star game.

Matt Foster - KIJHL Kootenay Conference Player of the Month

Also the Dynamiters wish to give a big shout out to Matt Foster. Matt was named the KIJHL and Hi Heat Insulating December Players of the Month. Matt represents the Kootenay Conference and Aaron Buat, the veteran Sicamous Eagle is the Okanagan winner.

In 8 games played, Matt had 6 goals, 5 assists and 17 PIM

Matt scored 6 goals and had 11 points in 8 games to help lead the Dynamiters to a 6-2 record in that span.

Nitros hoping to buy at trade deadline

Kimberley Dynamiters' general manager Kevin MacKay is buying. He just has to find somebody willing to sell.

The KIJHL's trade deadline will pass as Monday dawns, but with games in the days leading up to it, MacKay expects much of the transaction action will take place Jan. 10.

"There's been a fair amount of talk the last couple of days. I'm assuming there will be some action on Sunday. I'm thinking everyone will get through the weekend and then look at some possibilities," said MacKay, who will travel to games in Fernie and Creston before trade talk heats up even more.

"I'm sure I'll sit all day by the phone Sunday and on the computer, see what's going on and hopefully we can add some bodies here."

MacKay is wary of altering his team's chemistry.

"I've been in a situation before where you pick up a guy that can be pretty cancerous in the room, maybe not a team guy, a pretty selfish guy," he said. "That's the old adage: you always know what's going out, you don't know what's coming in when you make a trade.

"That's why you try to do as much homework as you can if you're going to make a deal and see if that player is a decent person and go from there. You're making a gamble no matter what."

The Nitros used this week for a bit of team bonding. They gathered to watch the World Juniors' final Tuesday, while on Wednesday they were in Cranbrook to watch as the Kootenay Ice laid waste to the Saskatoon Blades.

The Dynamiters get back in action themselves tonight: they'll be facing the Fernie Ghostriders for the fourth game in a row.

"What's good about that is they push us pretty hard. They make us compete as hard as we can," said MacKay, whose club is still searching for its first win against the Eddie Mountain Division leaders.

"As a coach, you kind of enjoy that aspect. They're a measuring stick that we want to measure ourselves against. They've shown they've got some people that, when the going gets tough, they rise to the occasion and score some big goals on their behalf.

"We're getting our eyes opened, and I feel like we're just a fraction of an inch away from having success against Fernie. It's going to take a complete team, and everybody's got to have a strong game."

Matt Foster has carried Kimberley's offensive load against Fernie of late, and was named the Kootenay Conference Player of the Month for December. He had 11 points in eight games in the month.

MacKay said Saturday night's game in Creston might be even more important that tonight's.

"We want home ice to start in the playoffs so... every time we go head-to-head with Creston and Golden, we're going to have to beat them if we want to make a serious climb into second spot," he said.

"This is a huge game, and it's always a tough building to play in. It's a small rink, and bounces off the wall can go anywhere in front of the net. We just have to be sharp and hopefully we'll get some momentum Friday night and carry that in to Saturday's game."
